HAREWOOD SPEED HILL CLIMB - SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIP '22

Not an event we'd planned on going to, but a happy occurrance and a great afternoon. Hill Climb racing is possibly my favourite form of motorsport, but it's the European style which I find most appealing: blasting up long winding hillside roads in everything from rally cars to single seaters seems like an unparalelled experience and a powerful thing to spectate. This is a slightly different style with a purpose made closed course taking around a minute to complete. What this brings is the joy of an open paddock, comprehensive views of the whole track, and such an array of cars that I couldn't tell where they were all coming from. Racing has always seemed prohibitively expensive, and even at this level it would be for me, but it brings it at least within reach.

These are something I know nothing about. The shape and colour are gorgeous and they make a fantastic sound, but this era has never captivated me in the same way as later cars do.

I should have gotten a better shot of this little machine. This was the most similar to the Fiats I've seen in videos of Italian hill climbs with extreme wide track wheelbases and usually some heavily modified bike engine in the boot.

Looks like a Morgan to me? But could be any sort of older British car because I have absolutely no idea. I was just getting my eye in here with the whole panning thing as I've never tried it before.

Now a Hillman Imp is a car I love. They're just so perfectly car-shaped in the same way that the E30 or AE86 or Land Rover Defender 90 Pickups are and they look like great fun.

Getting slightly better with the panning here. I think I'm using the 20mm which was a lot easier but I shouldn't rely on being able to crop in just to make it easier for myself. This thing is probably the best example of how easy it looks to get into this sport and gives me some ideas....

Coming out to the car park and I can't quite believe it; a Porsche 1600 Super Coupe! I think this is the most beautiful car design ever and it's possibly my favourite car ever, although I know very little about them. Small cars with proportionally small engines are the best combination to me, and having that in such a gorgeous body is beyond anything I've seen achieved since. My Dad had a black 356 speedster kit car which was unfortunately split in half after someone crashed into it outside the house (I recall his excuse was that he was speeding to go and collect his wife from B&Q) but I still remember how it felt to go out in it. I don't think I'll ever stop trying to replicate the sound and smell and experience of being in that car; nothing about replicating it would make the feeling the same, and that's not what I'm chasing, but it's informed so much of my understanding of the beauty of cars and mechanical objects in general, that I couldn't say I'd found my perfect car until it felt like a 70 year old Porsche.

And then found we were parked next to this when we came out. A great end to a real fun day at the track, I definitely want to give it a go! Maybe in a 356 kit car....
